Jamie Walton

Jamie Walton is establishing himself as one of the most refined soloists of his generation. He has given concerts throughout Europe and the UK, in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls and festivals, including broadcasts and appearances at the Montpellier, Regensburg, Ansbach, Lucerne, Cheltenham, Three Choirs, Brighton, Harrogate and Chichester festivals where he performed the Dvorak concerto with the Philharmonia Orchestra under Shuntaro Sat.

He appears regularly at Wigmore Hall, London, and Symphony Hall, Birmingham, where his debut was a recital of Chopin for the Chopin festival.  Concertos followed there with the English Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra of the Welsh National Opera under David Lloyd Jones. He has appeared in recital at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, Fairfield Hall, Croydon, and the newly opened Cadogan Hall, London.  Jamie and his regular duo partner, Daniel Grimwood, were recently invited by Maestro Lorin Maazel to give a recital for his Chateauville Foundation in Virginia, USA.

Broadcast performances at the Radio Konzerthaus, Vienna, and concertos with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra were received rapturously by both audiences and critics alike, having made his debut there at the Eroica-saal in a programme of Beethoven.  Jamie’s debut commercial CD of the Chopin and Rachmaninov sonatas (SOMM Recordings), was selected for The Telegraph “Top 10 CDs of the year 2002” and a recent recording of music from France and Spain was also The Telegraph’s “CD of the week”.

Having studied with Margaret Moncrieff, Jamie went on to fulfil an intense study period with William Pleeth. Before his death, he wrote of Jamie:

“He is a cellist of great integrity and outstanding performance ability combining warmth of tone with a technical command which reaches dazzling proportions. He leaves little doubt as to the success that lies ahead of him.”

Jamie Walton is honoured to play on a 1765 Guadagnini cello, which is supported by a syndicate headed by the Co-operative Bank.  Jamie was recently admitted into the Freedom of the City of London.
